Last week I called a merchant company to find out about getting a better rate on my credit card processing fees. I was explaining to the gentlemen on the phone that I do a lot of pre-pay charges through my website so it was imperative that I be able to integrate a system to be able to do online payments. He asked me for my website so he could see if that would be possible. Then he said, “You’re not a psychic are you?” Now my first thought was, “did the big title on the website that says “PSYCHIC LISA ANN” give it away or is this guy a psychic himself? But I decided to be nice. “Yes, I am”, I said proudly. “Why, is that a problem?” He went on to tell me that they didn’t really “like” to work with psychic websites. Really? I went on to assure him that I was not a part-time fly by night psychic. I informed him that I have been a professional psychic for 15 years and I am the owner of Spiritquest Healing Center (which I have owned for 11 years and I have a DBA). Then he asked me for my work address. When I informed him I worked from home I got another “OH”. And not a happy kinda “OH”! I went on to inform him that I had a special business permit which allows me to work from my home. Then I began hearing myself talking to him (a sorta out-body-experience). I heard myself defending the fact that I am a psychic, my livelihood, where I live and how I choose to do my business. I couldn’t believe myself! I immediately ended the conversation and told him I would have to get back to him. The wonderful gentlemen called me a few days later excited to tell me he was all set to finish the process of “signing me up”. Really? Really! I informed HIM that I really don’t do business with people who are uncomfortable with what I choose to do for a living. I also informed him what a shame it was because I had three other people interested in switching over to his company. Guess it was a bad commission day for him.

Now I hate to admit this but this experience bothered me for days. I don’t understand how in the year 2010 there is still such a stigma attached to the word “Psychic”. I would like to say this is the first time I have ever experienced this but it is not. Years ago I was trying to do an ad on those table mats you see in the restaurants. The woman told me she would be happy to take my $500 but I couldn’t use the words “Psychic”, “Reiki” or “Past Lives” in my ad. Huh? I had to check my calendar to make sure it was indeed 2004 and not 1884! Needless to say I pulled my ad! And much to her surprise so did 2 of my other friends. Then a year later when I bought my house I was denied business insurance because they said they did not provide insurance for “psychics”. Yes, I gave that woman the same….it isn’t 1884 speech:)

This past January I decided to take a big step forward and change my website from “Spiritquest Healing Center” to “Psychic Lisa Ann”. I thought long and hard about my decision as I knew it would limit me in certain arenas. More importantly I felt if I didn’t do it I would be betraying myself. I was making a statement! I was saying I am Lisa Ann. I am a Psychic. I am very proud of what I do, the people I have helped and the lives I have assisted in changing. In some strange way I felt it was my mission to start shifting the energy that is currently attached to the word “Psychic”.
Things have come so far in the 15 years that I have been working as a psychic professionally. However, they apparently still have a LONG way to go. It is fascinating to me how judgmental people can be about something they don’t understand. I find it pretty funny since I truly believe everyone is “psychic”. Some people call it intuition, gut instinct or their inner voice. Regardless of what you call it we ALL have it!

Growing up I always remember hearing about how the USA was a melting pot; how we were the ones who welcomed everyone. I am not so sure about that. We judge people for their race, religion, sexual preferences, the clothes they wear, the jobs they have and on and on and on. I guess people really don’t pay any attention to the bias until it affects them directly. So what do you do when you are on the receiving end?

I truly believe that there are only two types of people in this world: those who walk the path and those who make their own path. I am not going to say that every time I have one of these experiences I don’t ask myself if my life would be easier if I just hid behind “Spiritquest Healing Center” and was just simply “Lisa Ann”. The fact of the matter is this has never been just a job to me. This is who I am. I live, eat and breathe my belief system. I make a living teaching people how to find themselves, how to be proud of who they are and how to create their happiness by being true to themselves. I cannot do that if I do not walk my own talk. I guess the bottom line is when you are on the receiving end of a bias you have to decide what is more important to you. Being true to yourself and your belief system or making other people happy/comfortable?

I was talking with a good friend of mine about my recent “psychic phobia” encounter and she reminded me that back in the day psychic were not only revered but they ran kingdoms! Funny how we seem to think we have come so far. Have we? The witch trials were a horrific example of fear taking over. How many people lost their lives because of other peoples fear and lack of understanding?

Now you are probably thinking, okay we get it. You are on a mission to change the stigma attached to the word “psychic” but really what kind of difference do you really think one person can make?  History shows it has always been the simplest acts done by one individual that changes the world! I seem to remember on December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a woman simply refused to give up her seat on a bus. Her name was Rosa Parks (interesting to note she was 42 years old – the same age I am right now!). That one single act would forever change history!

I am Psychic Lisa Ann. I am proud of who I am. I am honored to be able to help people and assist them in changing their lives for the better! Who are you?
